描述：Bluefield State College is a Division 2 HBCU that competes in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA). Home of the Big Blues, the school announced in August 2020 that it would be adding twelve competitive sports to its academic program included football, a sport that hadn’t been associated with the College since the 1940s. As part of the expansion of the athletic program, BSC looked to rebrand itself by considering an identity that was historically significant to the area and didn’t include religious affiliations or was being used by another school within three hours of its proximity. The Spotted Great Dane was ultimately selected due to its attributes of loyalty and leadership, and historical lineage of being used to hunt wild hogs and deter black bears as pioneers were making their way west of the Appalachian Mountains.
