The novel uses Fang Siqi's choice of behaviour to try to 'fall in love' with Li Guohua to reveal the extent to which women have been controlled by patriarchal cultural concepts for a long time and the practical effects of their internalisation, i.e. the multiple forms of male suppression of women in a patriarchal society and the possible ways and limits of women's resistance behaviour, thus highlighting the theme of male social norms killing and alienating individuals. The theme of alienation is thus highlighted.

Siqi and Yiting are two 13 year old junior high school students who love to read, adore literature and have a college student\'s bookshelf at a young age. They are like soul twins with their similar hobbies and close relationship. Yiwen, who was born just like Siqi, also loved literature and used to babysit Siqi and Yiting and read to them before Li Guohua came along. She was Siqi and Yiting\'s literary guide.
The beautiful Yiwen got married to Yiwei Qian, who had returned from studying in the USA. It was at this time that Yiting and Siqi met their tutor, Li Guohua, a language teacher who lived in the same building. Both Yiting and Siqi are fascinated by the handsome and literary teacher, Li Guohua. He was the trust in all young girls\' lives for a good elder, and a little bit of simple fluttering for men. It was at this time that Li Guohua took over Siqi and Yi-ting from Yiwen on the pretext that she was reading their essays. Little did she know that by letting her go, Siqi\'s \"life coach\" would become Li Guohua.

When Yiting learns of Siqi\'s relationship with Li Guohua, she is resentful and jealous. By the time Yiting really understands Siqi\'s pain, Siqi has gone mad. Yiting wants to reach out and care and try to help her, but pride keeps Siqi\'s mouth shut.
That summer, Yiting opens Siqi\'s diary and discovers her secret with Li Guohua.
Under the banner of literature, Li Guohua destroys Siqi\'s faith in literature with the \'love\' of adults.
Interspersed with the stories of Siqi and Li Guohua, forever in the teacher\'s small flat or various small hotels, are Siqi and Li Guohua talking about literature. A pre-teen girl, a man thirty-seven years her senior. In several literary conversations, I don\'t think Siqi ever lost. Siqi asked Li Guohua countless times if he loved her, and Li Guohua answered her affirmatively, telling her that he was \"unsuccessful\" in love until he fell in love with her. Siqi coldly despises this so-called love, but uses it to continue to rationalise their relationship so that she can convince herself to live.
Siqi is unable to accept the love of boys her own age because all she gets is the adult \'love\' that Li Guohua hands her, describing herself as a lily with stale willow juice and gumbo crawling with eggs.
Yiwen loves Qian Yiwei and is careful to maintain their relationship, even though Yiwei often violates her when he is drunk. She chose to forgive him over and over again.
Qian Yiwei is drunk and domestically abuses Yiwen.
He even beats Yiwen until she has a miscarriage.
Yiwen interrupted her studies for her marriage and has experienced domestic violence ever since. It took her a lot of effort to escape the building in the end, all that violence. She didn\'t push Siqi to do more than ask her when she tried to confide in her and wanted to talk. Siqi was also aware of the bruises under her summer turtleneck blouse and couldn\'t bear to add to her burden. yiwen was self-conscious and distraught. She had done enough, and who could blame her for anything? It is the mutual comfort of two women who are understanding of each other.
Yiting grew up slowly, normally, experiencing a normal life.
Yiwen told Yi Ting that she could choose to forget all this, or she could remember all this and choose to live her life for Siqi, to experience the normal life that she had not been able to experience. Yet no matter what Yiting chose, Siqi did not grow up further that afternoon in Li Guohua\'s room.
